8. The Collected Animations of ICAF (2001-2006)

A collection of the best entries shown at the annual Inter-College Animation Festival from 2001 to 2006. For many animation students in Japan participating in the festival is a chance to start their professional careers. The entries include works made using various animation techniques, including CGI and stop-motion. Taku Furukawa, Katayama Masahiro and Kihune Tokumitsu can be found among the judges of the festival.

In these jokey short films, many of them crudely animated, Kago's sick sense of humor reaches its full heights of absurdity. There's a playful surrealist sensibility to Kago's work, as well as a tendency to revel in the ridiculous, the crude and the disturbing. His work straddles a weird boundary between avant-garde experimentation and low-brow fart jokes—the punchline of one of these films is literally an oozing torrent of shit—although, admittedly, his videos seem to lean a bit more heavily towards the fart jokes than his comics. But hey, who doesn't appreciate a good fart joke once in a while?

Hanabeam is the lead track and video from Hifana's album 24H, released July 28, 2010. With the sound of fireworks at the core, this explosive single was composed by Hifana and is a fresh sonic expression of a Japanese summer matsuri , filtered through Hifana's signature Tokyo-born Japanese hybrid breakbeats. The video, co-directed by Fantasista Utamaro and Shane Lester, is another potent expression of Hifana's unique mixing of the old and new of Japanese aesthetics, updating and hybridizing the rich cultural traditions of matsuri and hanabi . Hifana are represented by two Hanabi-shi in this video, as they gradually re-energize a depressed city through the power of their beats, arriving at an enchanted temple where they unleash their final ultimate hanabi, triggering a colorful climax of explosive energy.
